Canine Public Training Coordinator Location Kansas City, MO (Calico Farms area) :

STARTING PAY IS $20.50

Schedule to be determined, including evening and weekend hours.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Canine Public Training Coordinator is responsible for the continued development and growth of Wayside Waifs' already successful positive reinforcement-based public training program. This person will teach group dog training classes and private lessons to members of the public, field training inquiries, schedule training classes, assist in volunteer education, and manage Waifs with Wisdom training program for long-term dogs. The ideal candidate will have a CPDT-KA or equivalent professional dog training certification and will be people-oriented with excellent customer service and communication skills. This position involves communicating information in large and small group settings, via email/phone and webinars.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Utilize the provided curriculum to teach group dog training classes to members of the public.

  • Provide in-shelter private lessons for members of the public to help address basic behavior concerns (basic obedience, confidence building, dog reactivity, etc.).

  • Respond to training inquiries made by phone, email, and in-person. Provide advice or direct to training classes or other resources as appropriate.

  • Utilize scheduling software to schedule classes and book training spaces.

  • Track and report data including number of animals served through classes, number of calls fielded and reasons for calls, and annual trends regarding registration and enrollment.

  • Ensure all aspects of an excellent client experience.

  • Coordinate with the Marketing and Adoption departments regarding training class promotions.

  • Stay up to date on industry trends.

  • Build the knowledge and skills of Wayside's staff and volunteers to support the canine behavior program.

  • Manage the Waifs with Wisdom training program for long-term dogs awaiting adoption in our shelter and provide follow-up support for these dogs post-adoption.

  • Other related tasks as assigned.

Required Experience & Skills

  • Demonstrate knowledge of dog behavior and body language.

  • Familiarity with various human learning styles to effectively teach and communicate with dog owners.

  • Ability to use safe and humane dog handling techniques for all dogs.

  • Ability to work independently and to provide and accept feedback in the moment.

  • Strong customer service background.

  • Attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to work under pressure.

  • Promote a positive, supportive, and inclusive culture and address issues that may contribute to a negative emotional experience.

  • Promote Wayside's mission, goals, and objectives.

  • Experience handling and training canines.

  • Experience teaching private lessons and/or group classes.

  • General computer experience required.

  • Demonstrated experience working effectively with people in a variety of high-stress situations.

  • Experience growing and managing programs and people.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication, time management and organizational skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with guests, staff, and volunteers from diverse backgrounds.

  • Excellent customer service skills, with high levels of compassion and empathy.

  • Previous shelter experience preferred.

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.

Education

  • High School diploma or GED required

  • CPDT- KA or equivalent required

  • Dog handling experience required

Physical

  • Ability to lift 50lbs.

  • Able to maintain control of dogs of all sizes

  • Significant amount of standing and squatting during a typical day

  • Exposure to fumes, animal smells, animal waste, and airborne particles

  • Noise level is moderate to high

  • Potential to be scratched or bitten
