Ultium Cells Overview Ultium Cells, LLC. is a joint venture Lithium-ion automotive battery cell manufacturing plant between LG Energy Solution, Ltd., and General Motors. This high-technology plant is a new construction that will have the latest in battery cell manufacturing technology. This $2.3 billion investment will be among the largest battery cell manufacturing plants in the world. Ultium Cells will produce battery cells for General Motors’ North American electric vehicle applications.

Job Description The Dangerous Goods Specialist serves as the key Subject Matter Expert (SME) for all matters pertaining to Dangerous Goods (DG) for Ultium Cells. This comprehensive role encompasses a wide spectrum of responsibilities including compliance, training, record-keeping, and permitting for Dangerous Goods. The specialist will maintain a solid working relationship with various teams, across multiple US locations and organizations. This role will also be responsible for supporting future initiatives and maintaining regulatory compliance. The candidate should be adept at conducting risk assessments, developing and executing a comprehensive training program, and working cross-functionally to ensure compliance with DG laws, regulations, and policies. The Dangerous Goods Specialist will also be responsible for managing and maintaining DOT Special Permits as well as regulatory compliance functions. The specialist will also need to maintain familiarity with trade compliance regarding cross-border trade with Canada and Mexico.
Primary Responsibilities - Serve as the Dangerous Goods Site Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Ultium Cells
- Attend and maintain country-specific DG certifications for all Ultium Cells personnel on-site and validate proper training for on-site suppliers
- Develop and update a comprehensive list of parts and materials identified as DG in transportation; communicate this list to all relevant personnel
- Maintain site shipping papers in compliance with local regulations and Ultium Cells retention policy
- Train others at the site on regulations, policies, and procedures related to Dangerous Goods
- Develop local work instructions for the handling and shipment of DG materials from the facility
- Lead the risk assessment process for Ultium Cells DG global program, working with regional/local sites to ensure required reviews are performed
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive training program, documentation, and records relating to Dangerous Goods
- Collaborate with Ultium Cells Customs, Legal Staff, and the Office of Export Compliance for the continuous improvement of the CTPAT/FAST/ISPM-15 Programs
- Manage and maintain DOT Special Permits required for the shipment of cells produced by Ultium Cells
Education - Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Supply Chain, Engineering, Chemistry or related
Skills - CDGP Certification required
- 49CFR Train the Trainer certification preferred
- Minimum 3 years of experience with Dangerous Goods Transportation compliance; relevant experience preferred
- Strong knowledge of DG laws, regulations, and policies, with the ability to apply this knowledge to anticipate and effectively communicate with site and regulatory stakeholders
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills; able to communicate with high-level government officials and Senior Leaders of Ultium Cells and our joint venture partners
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Ability to train others and develop comprehensive training programs
- Experience with cross-border trade compliance with Canada and Mexico is preferred
Note: Ultium Cells is willing to consider candidates with skills and mindset that meet the job requirements but do not have CDGP Certification or 49CFR Train the trainer credentials. Such candidates if selected are required to get the credentials within the first 3 months of employment.
