The Work You Will Do:

The Environmental Consultant,37020846 , is in the Division of Environmental Assessment and Restoration’s Biology Program, Molecular Biology Section in Tallahassee and will be responsible for preparing and analyzing samples using qPCR, providing technical scientific expertise, and leading microbial source tracking projects. This position provides the department and other resource agencies with the highest quality laboratory services available.

The Division of Environmental Assessment and Restoration (DEAR) is charged with protecting, maintaining, and improving the quality of Florida’s springs, rivers, lakes, estuaries, and coastal waters. DEAR team members provide the department and other resource agencies with the highest quality laboratory services available; provide technical support to the department and the public regarding water quality analysis and data quality assurance (QA); manage water quality data repositories for data storage and use by the department, other agencies and the public; and work together to monitor and assess Florida’s surface water and groundwater quality, develop strategies to reduce pollution, and work closely with local stakeholders to implement comprehensive restoration strategies that improve the lives of all Floridians and preserve aquatic resources for generations to come.

The work location of this position is in Tallahassee (Leon County), Florida. The city hosts the Capital of Florida and seat of state government. Your Specific Responsibilities:

In carrying out the duties of this position, the incumbent is expected, at all times, to be aware of and abide by the Department’s Standards of Conduct, as well as any and all departmental and/or work unit rules, directives, policies, procedures, and/or general orders applicable to performing the duties of this position.

This advanced environmental position will:

• Provide technical, scientific expertise, and consulting services to agency projects, programs and customers.
• Conduct sample preparation, DNA extraction and analysis using qPCR (quantitative polymerase chain reaction) in the Molecular Biology workgroup.
• Write and review Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and technical reports for agency use. Evaluate new molecular analysis methods and make recommendations to management for their usefulness in support of DEP programs.
• Evaluate the acceptability of biological analyses and take appropriate action in response to critical values or unusual or unexpected results, and document actions taken.
• Independently investigate and resolve analytical problems encountered in results, operation, preparation, and analytical procedures.
• Review, upload and authorize analytical data to the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to meet deadlines.
• Review and maintain Q/C (quality control) and calibration charts, maintenance logs and data files with appropriate frequency.
• Oversee staff training in the proper performance of molecular biology, biological and routine laboratory procedures.
• Maintain familiarity with scientific literature in the field of environmental molecular biology and microbial source tracking.
• Evaluate and incorporates new equipment and methodologies. Troubleshoots instrumental and analytical problems. Ensures assigned instrument validation projects are completed in a timely manner.
• Performs other work as required by supervisor.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of general biology, microbiology, and molecular biology.
• Knowledge and skill in the use of computers and software programs utilized for word processing, database management, and spreadsheet applications.
• Skill in preparing technical reports and publications.
• Skill in the use of scientific laboratory equipment.
• Ability to perform qPCR methods and interpret qPCR data.
• Ability to evaluate new molecular methods and procedures.
• Ability to use QC measures to evaluate accuracy, precision and efficiency of qPCR methods and ensure high quality data.
• Ability to create and review Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Ability to instruct and train coworkers and new employees in the proper performance of routine laboratory procedures.
• Ability to maintain a high level of professional expertise through familiarity with scientific literature in the field of environmental source tracking.
• Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
• Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments, determine work priorities, and ensure completion of work assignments.
• Ability to work independently with minimum supervision or as part of a team as required to achieve specified goals.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Valid State of Florida Driver License.
• Occasional travel.
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college in environmental science, natural sciences, biological sciences, or physical sciences, and 3 years of verifiable related experience; or any combination of post-secondary education or verifiable related experience, as described above, for a total of 7 years.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience using TaqMan® qPCR assays.
• Experience performing DNA extractions.
