About Our Program

The Comptroller of the Treasury's Audit Internship Program is a 10-week paid educational and experiential learning opportunity offering undergraduate students a chance to witness and participate in the operations of the office. Interns will spend the summer building skills through their finance-related assignments. Interns will also have opportunities to build relationships with each other through shared experiences, such as touring the State Capitol and the Tennessee State Museum. 

Position

The Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury is seeking a  Financial Analyst Intern within the Division of Local Government Finance (LGF). This division furthers the core mission of the Comptroller’s Office, making government work better, by providing support to the financial operations of local governments and other governmental entities in Tennessee. LGF initiatives directly support the financial health of local governments in Tennessee. LGF approves budgets, debt obligations, and certain investments for cities, counties, and utility systems in Tennessee and serves as staff to the Tennessee Board of Utility Regulation.

Responsibilities of this position will include:
  • Inputting data into local government financial health models.
  • Verifying reports are filed for utilities, industrial development boards, and local government debt disclosures.
  • Preparing internal reports from the LGF tracking system.
  • Helping with website design, monitoring, and disaster recovery testing.  
  • Coordinating with the Data Manager on data projects.
  • Assisting with other projects assigned by management.
As a Financial Analyst Intern, you will have the opportunity to contribute to our mission of making government work better and produce meaningful work. This position has a 37.5-hour work week with a hybrid in-office/teleworking schedule.  

Location

This internship position is based out of Nashville, Tennessee. Depending on the assignment, interns may have the opportunity for limited travel during the summer. Typical travel opportunities are in the Nashville area; however, some may allow for travel to other parts of Tennessee.  

Who We're Looking For

We are looking for rising juniors, seniors, or graduate students with an emphasis in finance, data analytics, data science, and/or accounting who are interested in applying what they've learned in the classroom to governmental finance. To be considered for the internship program, candidates should preferably have successfully completed at least 6 hours of coursework in these fields.

 
Successful interns are those who are adaptable, able to think critically, work well both individually and as part of a team, and are willing to learn and grow. Candidates should exhibit interpersonal and communication skills to communicate tactfully with local governments, coworkers, and others.  Interns are expected to apply their classroom knowledge to meaningful work responsibilities. 

About Our Office

The Office of the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury is responsible for reviewing and approving the budgets for more than 600 local governmental entities, auditing state and local governments, and participating in the general financial and administrative management and oversight of state government.  In the Comptroller’s Office, we strive to deliver on our mission to make government work better.  Through dedicated hard work and commitment, every Comptroller’s Office employee accepts personal responsibility to accomplish our mission and uphold it.

Compensation  

Interns are paid $24 per hour via a third-party company. This position may require in-state day travel to work sites. Work-related travel will be reimbursed.
