We are seeking a Paralegal  to support the North Carolina National Guard (NCNG) Office of Staff Judge Advocate (SJA) at the NCNG Joint Force Headquarters in Raleigh, NC.

So, what will the Paralegal at Terrestris do?

As a Paralegal, you will provide services via phone, email, and in-person office meetings that are scheduled and by way of walk-in during regular office hours, or at scheduled pre-deployment and post deployment special events to eligible Service Members and their families on civil legal matters. You will update Legal Assistance social media and respond to messages on social media in order to facilitate dissemination of information regarding the Legal Assistance Program to the widest possible extent and will be expected to respond to messages within 2 days of receipt, provide relevant legal assistance topics of interest every 3 days, and manage content on the public facing website.

What does a typical day look like for the Paralegal?

You will:

  • Provide administrative support in the following areas of law:
    • Family Law: You will respond in a timely manner to requests for assistance via phone calls, in-person appointments, and at special events to help clients understand North Carolina Family Law and options to address their legal question or issue. This will also involve assisting eligible members in understanding and preparing pro-se filings for marriage annulment, paternity child custody, financial nonsupport, separation, and divorce.
    • Estate Planning: You will assist eligible members in the preparation of core estate planning documents to meet soldier and family estate planning needs by obtaining required information from clients and timely and accurately drafting for attorney review documents including:
      • Wills of simple to moderate complexity including:
        • Testamentary trusts for minors.
        • Special needs trusts.
        • Guardianships.
      • Health care directives including:
        • Living Wills.
        • Health care powers of attorney.
      • Powers of attorney including:
        • General powers of attorney.
        • Special powers of attorney.
    • Real Property: You will respond in a timely manner to requests for assistance via phone calls, in-person appointments, and at special events to help clients understand North Carolina Landlord Tenant Law and prepare correspondence and draft pro-se documents to help with landlord tenant disputes and matters relating to the purchase, sale, or rental of principal residence.
    • Economic Law: Ability to issue spot decisions, research within civilian and military authorities, and draft responses on behalf of eligible members with no more than 2 errors per document with matters including: disputes over debts, requests for assistance with bankruptcy, banking, credit card, property, insurance problems, and claims. Assistance with assertion of rights under the Service-members Civil Relief Act and limited guidance on Veterans' reemployment rights. Review contracts for purchases of personal property including security agreements, warranties, and other consumer affairs matters requiring knowledge of state and federal consumer protection statutes.
    • Civilian Administrative Law: Ability to issue spot decisions, research within civilian and military authorities, and draft responses on behalf of eligible members with no more than 2 errors per document with matters including: name changes, immigration, naturalization, and other cases dependent on available resources.
    • Military Administrative Law: Ability to issue spot decisions, research within civilian and military authorities, and draft responses (utilizing AR 25-50 formatting) on behalf of eligible members with no more than 2 errors per document with matters including: preparation of responses in Line of Duty investigations, referred Officer Evaluation and Non-commissioned Officer appeals, relief for cause reviews, replies to memoranda of reprimand, Article 138 complaints, Inspector General investigations, hardship discharges, compassionate reassignments, officer unqualified resignations, and correction of military records. May also assist with bars to reenlistment, security clearance revocations, suspension of favorable personnel actions, physical evaluation boards, and qualitative management program for enlisted and officers.
    • Taxes: Ability to prepare and file federal and state income tax returns through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA), completing up to 6 return packages each day.
    • Preventive Law: Ability to provide information briefings during pre-mobilization events, which may include up to 6 pre-mobilization briefings each month during normal office hours and outside of office hours. Prepare handouts on timely relevant issues to educate and protect Service Members and their families on federal and state protections and availability and types of legal assistance available to eligible clients.

What qualifications do you look for?

You might be the paralegal we're looking for if you have:

  • A Paralegal Certificate or a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution in a field with legal emphasis.
  • Familiarity with North Carolina law.
  • Ability to respond to legal assistance requests to help eligible clients understand North Carolina Law, referral resources, and other alternatives to address their questions.
  • Ability to independently perform legal research involving complex legal issues across civilian and military bodies of law. Further, possess the ability to understand the difference between legal references found and the ability to compile research into a comprehensive response for the supervising attorney.
  • Two years practical experience in the techniques necessary for proper analysis of fact and issues of law. Ability to spot legal issues and respond with appropriate questions, analyze the issue and answers given, compare with relevant law, and provide guidance and direction in memorandum format.
  • Ability to accurately draft for attorney review, up to six estate planning packages each day using Government software, including simple wills, testamentary trusts for life insurance proceeds, and powers of attorney.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills: Must be able to respond to a variety of clients in a busy office environment and at special events in a professional and courteous manner.
