Job Description

Summary of Position:

The Senior Manager, Project Management (SMPM) leads the CLHSS project management team (5 and growing), setting standards and practices for project execution, and manages a portfolio of research projects in healthcare delivery and digital innovation, ensuring coordination and alignment with business objectives, and that projects are completed on time, within scope, and within budget.

The ideal candidate for this position will have excellent, proactive problem-solving and decision-making abilities, be collaborative with various stakeholders, and be adaptable to handle multiple projects and adapt to changing research needs. Problems encountered are varied and complex, typically involving substantial planning and resource coordination to resolve via new or creative solutions. The CLHSS research environment is interdisciplinary, multi-faceted, and fast-paced. The SMPM will operate under minimal supervision with the authority to guide day-to-day project operations and will seek guidance for significant changes in process, scope, or resource needs.

Duties/Responsibilities:

50%: People Management

  • Provide leadership for staff and foster a professional, diverse and equitable working environment within the center for people from all backgrounds, communities, and identities, where staff are empowered and accountable.
  • Directly oversee and manage project managers to meet defined project deliverables, annual goals and metrics.
  • Develop staff capacity and consult with core and program leadership to determine staff work plans and goals with overall center and core/program strategies.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and best practices in research management.
  • Develop strategic relationships with cross-organizational stakeholders from clinical, technical, research, and faculty areas while mitigating competing requests for resources.

25%: Research Portfolio Management

  • Direct incoming requests for services to project managers based on request type and resource capacity.
  • Partner with CLHSS internal services organization manager for requirements gathering and quoting, tracking, and billing.
  • Develop and track milestones and metrics to demonstrate value and maturity.
  • Monitor project progress, performance, and make necessary adjustments.
  • Partner with the regulatory specialist to ensure that regulatory compliant standard operating procedures are followed center-wide.
  • Manage and resolve project-related issues and conflicts.

25%: CLHSS Strategy & Optimization

  • Actively participate on the center management team
  • Identify and lead business process improvement projects to enhance the performance
    of the center.
  • Contribute to project status/metric dashboard for continuous reporting and compilation of center annual report.
  • Other duties as assigned

Work Arrangements:

This position follows UMN Work. With Flexibility. guidelines. Currently, the position will be primarily working from home. There may be occasional needs to be on campus and over time there may be a need to set a regular schedule for a few days on campus each week. Work hours should follow a regular schedule between 7-5, M-F.

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS with at least 8 years of research/project management experience or an advanced degree plus 6 years of related experience 
  • Strong analytical skills with established organization and project management strategies to keep track of details in the context of the larger objectives and manage multiple projects and changing priorities
  • At least 3 years of experience managing a cross-disciplinary team or small department.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage others, set and maintain deadlines, and prioritize assignments
  • Prior experience working in healthcare and/or academic research.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills
  • Proficient with Google and Microsoft Office suite.
  • Commitment to positive team dynamics, client satisfaction, and creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience managing clinical and/or translational research studies.
  • Formal project management training or certifications.
  • Information technology, data science, or other technical experience or familiarity.
  • Experience with regulatory aspects (e.g. IRB and FDA) of conducting clinical research.
  • Experience at the University of Minnesota
  • Experience working on federally funded projects
  • HIPAA & CITI Training
  • Graduate degree in related field.
  • Proactive, self-starting work ethic
