Job Description

Weiss Associates, a premier environmental engineering and management firm in Northern California, is seeking a Staff to Senior Staff Engineer, Geologist or Scientist with up to 5 years of work experience to perform field and office duties on diverse environmental and civil projects, including hazardous waste remediation, storm water management, and environmental compliance.

The position will be based in our Emeryville office but will require frequent field work in Mountain View. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the company permits employees to conduct office from home, or the companys offices, at their discretion. This is an interim policy and subject to change.

Essential duties may include, but will not be limited to:

Performing field work on an as-needed basis including, but not limited to, collecting field measurements and samples; documenting field observations and activities; directing/monitoring contractors performing drilling and earthwork; and performing routine maintenance on remote data collection and remediation equipment;

Performing operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of treatment systems and remote data collection systems at project sites;

Installing an operating remediation treatment systems and related components (e.g., pumps, motors, pump savers, transducers, flow meters, filters, PLCs, liquid/vapor GAC, air strippers, chemical injection systems, etc.) and collect data with portable instruments, including PIDs, FIDs, meters, field test kits, etc.;

Performing pilot tests for remediation (e.g., soil vapor extraction, aquifer pump tests, in-situ bioremediation) and storm water treatment (e.g., filtration, adsorptive media) technologies;

Designing and implementing best management practices for storm water pollution protection at construction, industrial, and municipal facilities;

Performing engineering calculations, draft drawings in AutoCAD, and assisting with construction permit and contractor bid packages;

Assisting with facility inspections to assess compliance with permit and regulatory requirements (e.g., hazardous materials storage, spill prevention, storm water protection);

Recording, evaluating, and interpreting data, preparing reports and work plans, and providing analysis and interpretations of findings based on scientific experimentation and existing knowledge;

Determining the proper methodology for scientific studies for individual environmental sites, performing the studies, and evaluating results;

Assisting with the evaluation, selection, design, and implementation of site remedies involving soil and groundwater remediation (in-situ and ex-situ), treatment of hazardous wastes, and site management and closure;

Planning, coordinating and writing reports that document field methods and data and calculations related to groundwater flow and treatment and storm water hydrology;

Preparing maps, figures, graphs, charts, and tables; analyzing data, and developing conclusions and recommendations;

Coordinating, scheduling and directing field activities for other technical staff; and

Performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements include a BS degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering, Geology, or similar discipline (MS degree preferred); up to five years of experience; and a strong working knowledge of MS Office 365 Suite and AutoCAD; ArcView GIS knowledge is beneficial.

Also required are a valid California drivers license and an insurable driving record; Engineer-in-Training or Geologist-in-Training certification, or the ability and intent to obtain certification; evidence of vaccination against COVID-19; and the ability and willingness to perform field work in all weather conditions and to wear a respirator as required.
