Longshoreman (Dockworker) at a Japanese Logistics Company

Summary:

A Longshoreman is a vital member of the maritime workforce, responsible for the safe and efficient loading and unloading of cargo ships, as well as the operation of equipment and the maintenance of port facilities. This physically demanding role requires individuals to work outdoors in various weather conditions and maintain a strong focus on safety protocols.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Cargo Handling:

  • Loading and unloading cargo using various equipment such as cranes, forklifts, pallet jacks, and manual handling techniques.
  • Securing cargo within containers and on pallets to prevent damage during transport.
  • Sorting and organizing cargo based on its type, destination, and handling requirements.
  • Inspecting cargo for damage or discrepancies, and reporting findings to the supervisor.

Equipment Operation:

  • Operating heavy machinery, including cranes, forklifts, straddle carriers, and other specialized port equipment (training provided).
  • Performing pre-operational checks on equipment to ensure safety and proper functioning.
  • Following safety guidelines and traffic regulations while operating equipment.

Warehouse and Yard Maintenance:

  • Maintaining cleanliness and orderliness in warehouse and dock areas.
  • Stacking and storing cargo safely and efficiently.
  • Removing debris and potential hazards from work areas.

Qualifications:

  • Education: a high school diploma or GED 
  • Experience: Prior experience in warehouse, construction, or logistics is beneficial but not always required.

Skills:

  • Physical fitness and stamina to perform demanding manual labor.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Basic math and literacy skills.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures and regulations.
  • Certifications: May require or have the opportunity to obtain certifications for operating specific equipment (e.g., forklift certification).

Working Conditions:

  • Work is primarily performed outdoors in a port or harbor environment.
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind.
  • Physically demanding work, involving lifting, carrying, bending, and standing for extended periods.
  • Potential exposure to noise, dust, and fumes.
  • Requires adherence to strict safety protocols to minimize risks.

Working hours are variable and may include early mornings, days, evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed. Flexibility is essential to accommodate the demands of the shipping schedule and terminal operations.
